Why should the way you walk and/or run be assessed?

For many people, the injuries and pain in their lower limbs can often be attributed to chronic injuries. This means that there wasn’t necessarily a specific injury “moment”, that occurred. Rather, these injuries have occurred gradually and may have many causes, including overuse, poor walking and running technique, sporting overuse, poor footwear and bad training habits.

A walking and running assessment, also known as a gait assessment or gait analysis, allows our podiatrists to find the answer to your most important question – “why are we getting the pain?”.

The answer to this question is most often because of the shape of our feet, the way we walk, and the way we distribute pressure when we walk.

During a walking and/or running assessment, we have you walk and/or run on our treadmill, and we record this on an app. This app allows us to dissect the way you walk and/or run. We can see the smallest details as we can slow down the video and focus on particular movements.

This means we can find that exact cause of your pain.

During this assessment, the video feed is linked to a TV that you can see, so you can see how you move in real time, which is particularly helpful when correct technique issues.

What are we looking for during a walking and/or running video assessment?

We are trying to find the reason behind the pain you’re experiencing in your body.

Our expertise in lower limb movement, means we understand exactly how things are meant to be happening. And along with understanding your history, we can pinpoint the exact cause of your pain.

We’re looking to find the little abnormalities that are leading to the pain you’re experiencing, and when we find them, we can tailor a treatment plan to relieve you of this pain.

What conditions might be affected by the way I walk and run?

So many!

Most chronic foot injuries and pain is caused by the way we move, however, a video assessment of the way you run and walk can also help us in diagnosing and treating the following conditions:

These are only some of the conditions we might be able to diagnose through a walking and running video assessment.
