What is a moon boot?

A moon boot or CAM (Controlled Ankle Movement) walker is a brace that is worn on around your foot and lower leg and is designed to limit the force you put through the foot when you walk, to help you recover from an injury.

A moon boot is worn instead of a shoe and is able to be removed so you can shower and keep your feet clean. They come in a variety of styles, including open toed moon boots and various heights. Depending on your injury, you may not need to use crutches while you use a moon boot, as they are designed to facilitate walking.

How do moon boots work?

The reason a person will be required to use a moon boot is to aid in the recovery of an injury they have experienced to foot, ankle, heel, or lower leg region.

The moon boot has a rounded sole, that makes it possible for people to walk and weight bear on the injured area, without needing to move any of the joints in the foot or ankle.

By keeping the ankle and foot fixed in place and removing some of the weight off the area, recovery from an injury is aided significantly and, in most instances, you still have great mobility.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long will I wear a moon boot for?

The amount time you will need to wear your moon boot for will totally depend on the injury you are recovering from. You might need to wear one for as little as a week or as long as several months. 4-8 weeks would be the most common length of time.

We will advise you of the estimated time frame and also monitor your recovery process to ensure you’re wearing it for the right amount of time.

  • How much do moon boots cost?

At Hurst Podiatry we charge $70 for a moon boot and $40 dollars for an even up – which is to help level out the height of your other shoe if this is required.

We do strongly recommend you have a consultation as part of the fitting process. This makes sure you get the right size, style, fit, and most importantly, all the advice you require on what to expect with your CAM walker moon boot.

  • What does wearing a moon boot feel like?

When you first start wearing a moon boot, they can feel quite odd and often people describe them as heavy.

They take a little while to adjust to, as they have a “rockerbottom” base that rocks the foot while it walks, meaning the boot effectively walks you. This sensation takes a bit of getting used to, but most people adjust within a day or two.

Some patients report a sense of unevenness in the legs or the back when wearing a moon boot. This can be due to the height of the boot relative to the normal shoe on your “good foot”. To help with this, we offer a product called an even up that can be fitted to your other shoe to lift it up to the same height as the boot foot which can help to level out your back and legs.

  • Do I need to buy a new moon boot or can I rent one?

You will need a new moon boot. We can provide a new moon boot to you but we do not rent them out for hygiene reasons. Moon boots are exposed to a lot when they are worn during an injury recovery, so it is best to always use a new moon boot.
