Ingrown Toenails

What are they?

An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the nail pierces, or puts too much pressure on neighbouring skin, causing the nail to grow into the skin. Ingrown toenails can be very painful and debilitating when left untreated, ingrown toenails run a high risk of infection or complications if left untreated.

Ingrown toenails can be caused by incorrect cutting technique, previous damage or trauma to the nail or excess curvature of the nails

What are my treatment options?

Depending on the severity and length of time that you’ve been putting up with you ingrown toenails we have several options to help. Treatment may be as easy as carefully cutting out some of the effected nail, education on better cutting technique or packing the nail to allow it to grow out painlessly. In more severe and longstanding cases we can perform a wedge resection or partial nail avulsion where under a local anaesthetic a small portion of the edge of the nail is removed and a chemical is used to stop this section of the nail from growing back again.
